WHAT IS MOISSANITE?

Fabulous (and not costly) Moissanite Diamonds instead of real ones! Moissanite is a `naturally occurring crystal or gem found in the meteor crater, but right now technologies have enabled this to be perfected and converted to amazing-looking gems that will compete with the brilliance, fire, etc. of real diamonds.

MOISSANITE POSSESSES UNUSUAL PHYSICAL QUALITIES.

Even though it can be visually similar to diamonds, moissanite is a gemstone in its own right due to tiny physical differences that distinguish it from diamonds: differences in chemical composition, hardness, clarity, color, and even sparkle.

Chemical Makeup

Silicon carbide is the chemical that moissanite is made of—an incredibly rare mineral on the earth, and impossible to apply in jewelry; therefore, today's moissanite is created in highly controlled laboratory conditions.

MOISSANITE COSTS A FRACTION OF THE PRICE OF DIAMONDS

Unlike the diamond, which can come in a vast range of grades, moissanite can be created and fashioned to any size for about the same price, in comparison to a much more expensive diamond with the same quality of stone. Essentially then, diamonds are natural stones with a wide variety of grades that work their way into determining the price of the given stone based on cut, clarity, color, and carat. The Moissanite stone has very minimal fluctuations in cut, clarity, or color, thus making the price point of the stone change depending on the size of the cut stone.

Cautioning that moissanite stones are therefore monumentally cheaper than their mined counterparts would be an understatement. With diamonds, prices just become ridiculous the minute you look up anything over one carat. With moissanite, they rise in a much more proportional order. For instance, a VVSI-2 1.5 ct (7.5 mm) Round moissanite is going at about AUD 900, while a like-sized diamond of comparable clarity and color sells for over AUD 9000! This means that with Moissanite, one can have their size and style eyes without draining the account!

GRADING OF MOISSANITE COLOR

Traditional Moissanite stones will be assessed for color according to the standard D-to-Z color grading scale in this manner:

1. A completely colorless Moissanite stone is graded as D-E-F.

2. A Near-Colorless Moissanite stone is graded as G-H-I.

3. A Slightly Tinted Moissanite stone is graded as J-K.

As one progresses higher up the alphabetical grading scale, the Moissanite color changes to a more yellow or brown hue.

Moissanite is better known as a diamond simulant that looks like a natural diamond, but physically and chemically it is by far different from a true diamond. Hardness, brilliance, and color-wise, the two stones have a long way of being identical. Both diamonds and moissanite are high in conductivity to heat.

BRILLIANCE AND FIRE

One more thing that makes moissanite famous is the fact that it has a higher refractive index than that of a diamond. A moissanite stone will, in fact, basically bend more of the entering light compared to that of a diamond. That is more of those small flashes of white light, more broken down into color, and it creates an effect like a disco ball when it shines at the light.

A moissanite stone will sparkle under the light and could show a brilliance close to a "disco-ball" rainbow. Compare this to a diamond, with its drab blue-grey kaleidoscope patterning. Moissanite's sparkle is more brilliant and dramatic—but it is typically the trait that our customers love!

COMPARISON GUIDE

MOISSANITE VS. DIAMOND

  • MOISSANITE

Durability: A moissanite stone, having a score of 9.25 on the scale, is great for everyday use.

Scintillation: Moissanites sparkle in a way that is quite different from a diamond because they are faceted differently. Some people love the fiery rainbow flashes that moissanite emits, while some believe that moissanite, especially under bright sunlight, can give off a "disco-ball" type of effect because of its brilliance. And the bigger the moissanite is, the more chances this difference will be crystal clear. The refractive index of moissanite is 2.65 – 2.69, fractionally better than that of a natural diamond.

Color: Moissanite, even if it is "colorless", will show yellow or grayish under some forms of lighting conditions. Also, the bigger the moissanite, the more color it will show.

Sourcing: Moissanites, of course, are made in labs, so in practical terms, they're a popular option among those looking for an eco-friendly gem because there is no mining.

  • DIAMONDS

Durability: Diamonds are the hardest known mineral. They rate a 10 on Mohs' Scale of Hardness. Hence, diamonds are very durable for everyday wear.

Brilliancy: It may have different kind of brilliance that will let one tell the difference between moissanite and diamonds. There is not one, but three, ways diamonds give back light. Thus the whiter reflected light is called the brightness though the refracted rainbow of colors via the diamond is called dispersion. The third is the surface sparkle, which is the scintillation of diamond light. The combination of these three features is exactly what gives diamonds their renowned brilliance.

Body Color: A colorless diamond—whether natural in color, or lab-grown, is colorless with a transparent body free from yellow, brown, or grey as a byproduct—producing the firmly striking white brilliance.

Origins: We have done better than what is existing as industry standards today, to provide our customers not only Beyond Conflict Free ™ Diamonds, but also with origins that have been meticulously handpicked, ensuring ethics and environment-friendly practices.

Can you tell a moissanite from a diamond?

Themost effective way to tell moissanite apart from a diamond is to use a loupe tolook through the top, or the crown, of the jewel at an angle. You will see twoslightly blurred lines that indicates a double refraction, an inherent qualityof moissanite. Double refraction is easier to see in some shapes than others.

Does moissanite lose its sparkle?

Moissanite will not lose its sparkleas time passes. The clarity and color of the stone won’t change through theyears. Dirt and grime are the only common elements that may inhibit a ring’ssparkle until it is cleaned. Damaging the surface of moissanite can inhibitsparkle, as it would for any gemstone.

Is moissanite durable?

Moissanite is one of the toughestknown gemstones which makes it perfect for an engagement ring, a piece ofjewelry that is usually worn every day. Studies in high pressure research haveshown that moissanite stone is highly resistant to breaking and chipping.

Is moissanite as good as a diamond?

Moissanite is the only gemstone thatpasses as a diamond on a handheld point test. If you want a stone thatresembles a diamond without a high price, moissanite is a great option. At theend of the day, preference comes down to personal taste.
